Marty Smiley is a two-time Walkley Award-winning journalist. He makes documentaries, hosts podcasts, writes longform articles and shoots stills & video on the road primarily for the ABC.
Since 2021, Marty has worked as a reporter and producer across Foreign Correspondent, Background Briefing, 7.30, ABC Investigations and the Specialist Reporting Team. His international work has spanned documentaries on Iran, Ukraine, South Africa, Hong Kong, India, Botswana and most recently New Zealand for Compass. He won the 2023 Walkley Award for International Journalism for his Foreign Correspondent documentary on Iran's protest movement.
On Background Briefing, the ABC's flagship investigative podcast, his stories have ranged from the elitism behind doctor shortages in western Sydney, to Gazan-Australian families racing to bring family members home, to the Soviet-born oligarch now controlling Foxtel.
Before the ABC, Marty spent four years at SBS on the nightly current affairs program The Feed, where he won the 2020 Walkley Award for Visual Storytelling. He got his start in television at Channel [V], hosting live music shows and interviewing artists including Lorde, James Blake, Brockhampton, Charli XCX and the Wu-Tang Clan.
His writing has appeared in The Saturday Paper, VICE and the Guardian. Born in Melbourne and of Lebanese descent, Marty spent six years as a youth worker with the Reach Foundation before moving into journalism.
